New rapid response treatment for depression
Depression is one of the most common mental disorders in the world and affects approximately 15 million Americans. Unfortunately conventional treatments can take up to 6-8 weeks to provide relief of symptoms. Recent studies have confirmed Ketamine IV Infusion as a highly effective treatment for depression, chronic pain, anxiety and other conditions which produces rapid relief from symptoms.
What Is Ketamine?
Ketamine is a synthesised drug with a wide range of uses in the medical field in addition to its more colourful underground use. While it has been used in the medical field for over 50 years it is only more recently that science has realised it’s potential in treating depression and associated conditions. Ketamine was previously used as an anaesthetic on battle fields because it didn’t lower blood pressure or breathing rate; meaning that medical services could use it without needing to carry heavy and bulky respiratory equipment. It has also been used in the treatment of epilepsy as well as in some trials involving PTSD, successfully relieving some of the patients symptoms. Ketamine is actually classed by the WHO as an ‘essential medicine’ and many military units and hospital personnel still regularly use it in emergency situations for pain relief.
More recently however the treatment has been shown to be a highly effective and, perhaps more importantly, rapid treatment of depression. This is one of the major advantages of this treatment: instead of waiting weeks for relief when using more conventional treatments; using Ketamine provides relief from the first infusion.
Science and research
Given how recent the discovery is there have not been many official studies on ketamine treatment; but the response rates of treatments so far are leading to many more studies as institutions realise the potential of Ketamine as a solution .
The National Institute of Mental Health released an article : ”Ketamine: A New (and Faster) Path to Treating Depression”
This study’s results provide many positive results such as a 50% improvement on the HDRS following Ketamine treatment. These numbers are extremely encouraging, and confirm the efficiency of Ketamine Treatments. In a study of ketamine’s effects on patients in the depressive phase of bipolar disorder, ketamine restored pleasure-seeking behaviour, independent from and ahead of its other antidepressant effects.
Ketamine Infusion has even been found to be effective in the treatment of patients with treatment-resistant depression as well as anxiety and other conditions.
A study published in the Annual Review of Medicine found that the alternative antidepressants require weeks to months to produce their full therapeutic effects’ and are ‘effective in only a fraction of…patients’. Conversely ‘a single infusion of…ketamine demonstrated that rapid (within hours) antidepressant effects are possible’
While the FDA has not yet approved low dosage ketamine as a treatment for depression and other conditions, over 15 years of research have shown that sub-clinical doses such as this treatment can in fact rapidly, and effectively relieve symptoms.
How does it work ?
The Ketamine treatment works by inhibiting receptors in the central nervous system (CNS) which, when not working properly can lead to psychosis, Alzheimer’s, depression and other associated issues. It essentially ‘resets’ neural pathways and triggers rapid growth of new neural connections. Ketamine also has rapid anti-inflammatory effects which has also been shown to be effective in the treatment of depression. Another advantage of this treatment over conventional drugs is that ketamine has been shown to actively promote regrowth of pathways rather than simply block them, as other treatments do.
Studies are ongoing but promising with up to 70% of patients feeling relief of symptoms after just one infusion. In addition, patients who follow the recommended follow up treatments (4-6) over a 2 to 3 week period receive 90-95% relief of their symptoms. In some cases maintenance infusions may be required every 3-6 months, depending on personal circumstances.
Since Ketamine is a newer treatment and still undergoing further research, not all doctors offer it as a service. Here at Kalimera Wellness we have Board Certified Pain Medicine Doctors who are highly educated and familiar with ketamine treatment. We have joined forces with Kalypso Wellness who have developed proprietary formulations tailored to individuals needs, which allows us to personalise treatment to each client.
These formulations also mean that treatments are more effective and patients will have :
- Less pain
- More hopeful feelings
- Increased calmness
- Reduced depression
- Improved relationships
In summary, the Ketamine IV I fusion treatment provides relief from symptoms of depression after 1 treatment and within hours rather than the usual 6-8 weeks other treatments require. Initial results show a 90% success rate and has been highly effective even in the treatment of treatment resistant depression. Ketamine Infusion also actively promotes regrowth of pathways which have been damaged rather than just blocking them.
While it is a new treatment option, it is already trusted and used by well known medical professionals in various institutions such as the Mayo Clinic and Massachusetts General Hospital.
